For many years books were the source of knowledge. There are millions of books nowadays. But we live in times where books are getting more and more unpopular. But people are still reading. And it is easy to do it. We have many paper books and e-books. E-books are most popular. So why it’s important to read them?
First of all. By reading books you will get new insight or perspectives on issues that matter to you and it will help you to have a new understanding of the world around. It will help you to apply the insight in everyday life.
I do not want to believe that computer technology can replace a paper book. I have heard such predictions, but do not really want to believe them. Why? Because, at that time completely aesthetic changes in our perception of reality and the same aesthetic experience. Can we imagine ourselves admiring Diego Velázquez or Jan Vermeer works perfect reproductions on the computer screen? You can achieve the perfect level of image resolution, but then why would people still visit museums? It presupposes the material itself.

It is the same with the book. Book reading and survival is its touch, and not just vision and visual perception. The important parts is the smell, the touch, the feeling of the teardown. All of this is connected. People have created brilliant works, created not only a masterful combination of images or metaphors – they have created the material and form, and our relationship with it. I remember one of Ingmar Bergman’s phrase when he already was ripe with old age he said that he really wanted to read more, and keenly aware that books can resist the destruction of time. When you realize that you are left with a little time, you want to get the most out of the world and books. Bergman did a lot of reading and watched a lot of old movies, usually the old black and white movies, and over the old film equipment. Why was he doing that? He figured that digitally cleaned audio imperfections and extraneous sounds are part of survival – just like black and white aesthetics. Another comparison. Why in the world is vinyl alive? It is a real cultural boom. The static plate – also part of survival. Compressed and purified sound, it turns out, began to alienate people. They started to miss a little bit of imperfection.
